The Miami Open 2024 tennis tournament gets underway at the iconic Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday with a roster of top-ranked players. It includes Australia’s Alex de Minaur, Storm Hunter and Matthew Ebden, seeking to win titles in their respective events in the USA.

Currently 10th in the ATP tennis rankings, de Minaur will lead Australia’s challenge as the ninth seed in the men’s singles. An in-form de Minaur defeated Casper Ruud in the Mexican Open final earlier this month and in February, made it to the final of the Rotterdam Open, only to lose to Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner.

Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz is the top seed in the men’s singles without the presence of the world No.1 Novak Djokovic. Sinner is seeded second while defending champion Daniil Medvedev, who beat Sinner in the decider last year, and Andrey Rublev complete the top four.

Alex de Minaur has been handed a bye in the first round and will play against Alexandre Muller or Soonwoo Kwonin in the second round.

In the men’s doubles, world No.3 Matthew Ebden and his second-ranked Indian partner Rohan Bopanna, the reigning Australian Open champions, will be the top seeds.

Australia’s challenge in the women’s doubles will be led by world No. 3 Storm Hunter and world No. 8 Ellen Perez but in different pairs. While Hunter will team up with the Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova, Ellen Perez will compete with her American partner Nicole Melichar-Martinez.

Storm Hunter also made it to the first round of the women’s singles on the back of two wins in the qualifying round. World No. 1 women’s singles player Iga Swiatek will be looking for her second Miami Open title, having won it in 2022. Defending champion Petra Kvitova has opted out, having announced her pregnancy at the start of the year.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, third-ranked Coco Gauff along with No. 5 Jessica Pegula are also in the fray.

Gauff and Pegula combined for the Miami Open doubles title last year and are seeded fifth this year. Hsieh Su-wei and Elise Mertens are the top seeds.

The Miami Open 2024 tennis tournament will conclude on March 31.
