Olympic bronze medallist Lee Zii Jia will look to turn his disappointing post-Paris 2024 form around this week when he heads to Vantaa, Finland, to play in the 2024 BWF Arctic Open – the same tournament which the world number five won last year to trigger a surge in his results.
The event, of which the later rounds are available to watch live on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the official Olympics app for mobile devices (territorial restrictions may apply), runs from 8–13 October 2024. Malaysia's Lee is the men's third seed, behind Denmark's Anders Antonsen and Japan's Naraoka Kodai.
Lee has already won two titles this year, triumphing at the Thailand and Australian Opens in the first half of the season. To win another in Finland, he will first have to overcome France's Christo Popov, against whom he has played only once – a win at the German Open in 2022.
Lei Lanxi of People's Republic of China or Japan's Tanaka Yushi would await in the last 16 if Lee makes it past Popov. The Malaysian has won both of his contests against Lei, including at the Thailand Open earlier this year en route to the title, while he has never faced Tanaka.
The other seed in his quarter who could be awaiting in the last eight is Indonesia's Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, while top seed Antonsen is also in Lee's half of the bracket and is a potential semi-final opponent.
