Along with its ODI counterpart, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is one of the premier competitions in women’s cricket today.

Started in 2009, the Women’s T20 World Cup has been held nine times to date and the Indian women’s cricket team has been a part of every edition to date.

The 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup was the ninth edition of the competition and India were part of the 10-team roster for the tournament in the United Arab Emirates as well.

Despite their constant presence in the competition and top-four finishes in five of the nine editions, India are yet to win the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup trophy.

The Australian women’s cricket team has won six ICC Women’s T20 World Cups to date and are the most successful team in the competition. Inaugural champions England, the West Indies, who lifted the coveted trophy in 2016, and 2024 winners New Zealand are the only other teams who have staked claim on the title of women’s T20 champions.

Captained by the legendary Jhulan Goswami, India made it all the way to the semi-finals of the inaugural ICC Women’s T20 World Cup held in England back in 2009 before being knocked out by New Zealand in the semi-finals.

India had finished second in Group B after England to make the top four.

The second edition held in the West Indies the following year saw India meet a similar fate, this time going down to eventual champions Australia in the semis.

The following three editions - 2012 in Sri Lanka, 2014 in Bangladesh and 2016 held on home soil - saw the Indian women’s team disappoint, failing to make it past the group stages.

At the 2018 T20 World Cup held in the Caribbean, Harmanpreet Kaur led India back into the knockout stages with an unbeaten run in the group stage, which also included a famous victory over Australia.

However, a narrow four-run semi-final loss to England saw the team’s ambitions of making its maiden final end on a heartbreaking note.

India’s best performance at Women’s T20 World Cup

Come the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia, though, India managed to march into the final of the competition.

Drawn in a tough Group A alongside Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, India shocked the hosts by 17 runs in their tournament opener before going through the group undefeated comfortably.

India’s semi-final fixture against Group B runners up England in Sydney was washed out due to rain, allowing India to go through to the final as they had topped Group A.

Seeking to down Australia again for their maiden title, though, the Indian eves came up short by 85 runs.

Australia, again, were responsible for ending India’s run at the 2023 T20 World Cup in South Africa, this time in the semi-finals.
