Hong Kong, China fought back valiantly to win team table tennis bronze against Germany. The new Olympic bronze medallists were trailing by one match before changing gear to triumph 3-1 against the Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallists.

The winning team, made up of LEE Ho Ching, DOO Hoi Kem of SOO Wai Yam Minnie, started slowly before going on to dominate the tie, winning three matches in a row to secure an impressive win. It represents the fourth medal won by athletes from Hong Kong, China at Tokyo 2020.

Soo, who takes home the bronze medal, was surprised by her own performance: “I shocked myself. I totally didn’t expect to win two matches. I’ve played both of them (HAN Ying and SHAN Xiaona) and you can say I was thrashed by them," she said.

"Their styles are bad match-ups for me. But today I wasn’t thinking of winning - just fighting, one point at a time. The results are completely unexpected. Even though we lost doubles, they played well and that inspired me to reach my level too. I want to especially thank them, because of them I was able to execute today.”

However, LEE said her and the rest of her team deserved top marks after a strong medal-winning performance.

“We got a medal so I think we all deserve 100 points. We go home having accomplished our mission,” she said.
