The return of the Hockey India League (HIL) was confirmed on Monday with the national federation announcing partners for all commercial and marketing operations related to the tournament.

The format, dates and the number of teams for the revamped hockey league will be decided later.

The Hockey India League was a city-based franchise league started in 2013. The hockey league allowed foreign players and provided budding Indian hockey players with a platform to develop their skills.

The Hockey India League was discontinued in 2017 due to a packed international calendar and growing financial hurdles.

The revamped hockey league will include tournaments for both men and women. Hockey India is already in talks with the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to make the windows available for the same.

“Hockey India League was one of my top priorities when I assumed office as president of Hockey India,” Dilip Tirkey, Hockey India president, said. “It (the league) will be a critical stepping stone for India and will revitalise not only hockey in India, but also bring fresh energy to the sport globally.”

The previous five editions of the Hockey India League from 2013 to 2017 were all held in January-February. Kalinga Lancers, Ranchi Rhinos, Delhi Waveriders, Ranchi Rays and Punjab Warriors won one title each.
