HIRANO Ayumu's dream to medal in two different sports has come to an end, at least for now.

The Japanese snowboarder, who won two silver medals at PyeongChang 2018, failed to make the final in the men's skateboard park competition at Tokyo 2020.

Hirano fell on his final run to finish 14th in the qualifying heats at the Ariake Park on Thursday (5 August).

The 22-year-old had a best score of 62.03 on his second run, but it wasn't enough to place in the top eight of the heats' combined ranking, led by Brazil's Luiz Francisco (84.31 points).

In May Hirano managed to secure his berth for the Tokyo Games after topping Japan's qualifying rankings.

In the stands to watch his fellow Japanese snowboarder and skater was American superstar Shaun White, who last year announced he would not try out for the skateboarding events in Tokyo to focus on his snowboarding at Beijing 2022.
