Olympic silver medallist Hellen Obiri says she is hoping to double up in both the women's 5000m and 10000m athletics events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in 2021 after booking her spot in the longer distance on the final day of the Kenyan Olympic trials near Nairobi on Saturday (19 June).

Obiri, who won Rio 2016 silver in 5000m – an event she qualified for on Thursday by finishing second in the trials – clocked 30:53.60 to lead home Irene Cheptai and Sheila Chelangat, who were both also named to the team.

"The race was good. I just wanted to seal top two," she said after the race according to Athletics Kenya.

"I have no pressure; I will be facing familiar opponents in Tokyo. I am used to fast-paced races and all I am going to do is continue with my training."

There was an upset in the men's 1500m as world champion Timothy Cheruiyot could only finish fourth and missed out on qualification.

Charles Simotwo came home in 3:32.75 ahead of Kamar Etyang and Abel Kipsang, confirming selection for his first Olympic Games.

Quotas were also handed out in the men's 800m as the country looks for David Rudisha's successor, with Michael Saruni – a former world indoor record holder over 600m – and Emmanuel Korir, both based in the U.S., finishing 1-2 ahead of world bronze medallist Ferguson Rotich.

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Abraham Kibiwott won the men's 3000m steeplechase.
