The stage is set for twenty-four of the world’s best handball teams to compete at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 from 25 July to 11 August.

The Olympic handball competitions begin with the group stages at South Paris Arena 6. The twelve men’s and twelve women’s teams will compete in two groups of six in the preliminary rounds as they attempt to qualify for the knockout phase, which will take place at the Pierre-Mauroy Stadium in Lille.

The women's gold medal game is on 10 August and the men's final takes place on 11 August—the closing day of the Games.

France will be looking for a repeat of their historical double triumph at Tokyo 2020, where Les Bleus were crowned Olympic champions in both the men’s and women’s tournaments. But this time, it would be even sweeter on home soil.

Below, we take a closer look at the stars to watch out for in Paris, a full schedule, and how to watch the action.

Handall star teams to watch at Paris 2024 Olympics

In the women's field, French phenom Pauletta Foppa is back aiming to claim another gold. Foppa was the top scorer in the final at Tokyo 2020, with seven goals, helping to secure France their first-ever gold medal in women’s handball.

French centre-back Léna Grandveau, the 2023 IHF Young Female Player of the Year, comes into these Olympic Games as an integral goalscorer who helped lift her nation to the 2023 World Championship final win over Norway.

Norway’s Henny Reistad, the IHF female player of the year, will be looking to overtake the host country by bettering their bronze-medal finish at Tokyo 2020.

In the men’s field, three-time Olympic gold medallist, France’s Nikola Karabatić, will be one to watch, as he attempts to make it four in his final Olympic tournament, marking retirement for this history-making legend of the sport.

The roster for Denmark includes the top scorer at Tokyo 2020, Mikkel Hansen. The three-time IHF Male World Player of the Year, who plans to retire after Paris 2024, will look to go one better than the silver medal he won at the last Olympics.

The 2023 IHF Male World Player of the Year and Tokyo 2020 Olympic handball MVP, Denmark’s Mathias Gidsel, will be another formidable player who’s game has only been improving.

The 25-year-old Egyptian right-back, Yahia Omar will look for a repeat of Tokyo 2020, where his nation advanced into the semi-finals, but this time, possibly onto the podium, which would be a historic first for Egypt in any team sport.
