Norway’s Halvor Egner Granerud was a cut above the rest, dominating the first leg of the prestigious Four Hills ski jumping tournament in Oberstdorf on Thursday (29 December).
Granerud was the epitome of consistency, topping both rounds to win the first leg of the tournament with a combined score of 312.4. The ski flyer produced two superior jumps of 142.5 metres (151.5 points) and 139.0m (160.9) to claim the title.
"It feels very good. My jumps yesterday and today were really good. I am absolutely satisfied with my performance today and I hope I can continue at this level in Garmisch-Partenkirchen," Granerud told the FIS.
Poland’s Piotr Zyla claimed the second step of the podium with a total of 299.0 points, with compatriot and overall World Cup leader Dawid Kubacki finishing third with 294.9.
Japanese Olympic champion Kobayashi Ryoyu got his title defence off to a rocky start finishing the first leg in 15th place with 256.6.
Kubacki is still comfortably in the lead on the overall rankings on 710 points with Slovenia’s Anze Lanisek trailing by 108 points. Granerud (516 points) moved into third place courtesy of his win in Oberstdorf.
The second leg of the Four Hills Tournament takes place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany on 1 January.
