More history awaits seven-time Olympic medallist Simone Biles at the 2023 U.S. Gymnastics Championships in San Jose, California.

The 26-year-old has the opportunity to become the only gymnast – man or woman – to win eight U.S. all-around titles. Currently, Biles’ seven titles is tied with Alfred Jochim, who last won the U.S. title some 90 years ago.

Biles comes to San Jose as the heavy favourite after a dominating performance at the U.S. Classic earlier in August that answered any question about the state of her return to the sport after a nearly two-year hiatus.

The women’s field also includes Olympic gold medallists Sunisa Lee, who took the all-around title at Tokyo, and Jade Carey, the reigning floor exercise champion. Team silver medallist Jordan Chiles is also in the field.

Those Olympic medallists will be challenged by a mix of experienced World Championships veterans like 2022 World all-around silver medallist Shilese Jones, who is competing for the first time in 2023, and 2021 World all-around silver medallist Leanne Wong, who finished second to Biles at the Classic.

2022 World team gold medallist Skye Blakely has performed well in recent months and could challenge for the all-around podium, as well.

Other contenders to keep an eye on include Joscelyn Roberson, Nola Matthews and Kaliya Lincoln.

There will be a new champion in the men’s competition with two-time champ Brody Malone out with injury.

Instead, the battle for the title will likely come down to Asher Hong, the U.S. Classic champion, and Fred Richard, the 2023 NCAA all-around winner.

Khoi Young, Paul Juda, and Cameron Bock are also set to compete for the crown in San Jose.
