India’s Gulveer Singh improved his own national record in the men’s 5000m event at the Yogibo Athletics Challenge Cup 2024 meet in Niigata, Japan on Saturday.

Gulveer Singh clocked 13:11.82 to win the race at the Denka Big Swan Stadium, which is hosting the two-day meet, a World Continental Tour bronze level competition.

In the process, the 26-year-old Indian athlete shed over seven seconds from his 13:18.92 run at the Portland Track Festival athletics meet in the United States of America earlier this year, which saw him take over the national record in the event from compatriot Avinash Sable.

All national records are subject to ratification by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

In the race, Gulveer Singh, a bronze medal winner from the Hangzhou Asian Games, emerged the winner with a just under two-second gap over Japan’s Mebuki Suzuki, who took second place with a personal best of 13:13.80.

Another Japanese runner, Kotaro Shinohara, took third place in the 19-man field with a time of 13:15.70.

Gulveer, who also holds India’s men’s 10,000m national mark of 27:41.81, won the gold medal in the 5000m at the National Open Athletics Championships in Bengaluru last month.
