Australia's Grace Brown blasted to victory in the women's road cycling time trial at the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Thursday (4 August).
Just four days after completing the Tour de France Femmes, the 30-year-old led at three checkpoints to before completing the 29km route through Wolverhampton in 40:05.20.
Victory will taste especially sweet for Brown who finished just out of the medals in fourth-place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in 2021.
Home hero Anna Henderson sealed silver with an impressive outing 33.35 seconds back, while New Zealand's Georgia Williams completed the podium in 41:25.27.
"I had the target on my back. I tried not to take on too much of the pressure of being the favourite, just staying calm and focusing on what I had to do," Brown said after.
"I caught the two girls in front of me which is always positive, but you still don't know if someone earlier in the field has gone faster. The team didn't tell me I was ahead until the last five kilometres so I assumed no news was good news."It's a landmark. From an Australian perspective, to be a gold medallist at a Commonwealth Games is something Australian sport acknowledges."
Brown's compatriot Georgia Baker, who won the points race earlier in the week and was part of the winning team pursuit, finished fourth.
Glasgow 2014 bronze medallist Ashleigh Moolman Pasio of South Africa was expected to challenge for a medal, but was a late withdrawal from the race due to injury.
