Golfers Anirban Lahiri and Udayan Mane will be India’s representatives in the men’s golf competition at the Tokyo Olympics when it gets underway at the Kasumigaseki Country Club on Thursday, July 29.
This will be a second Olympic outing for Anirban Lahiri after Rio 2016, where the experienced Indian golfer finished 57th.
Anirban Lahiri, ranked world No. 271, is keen to improve on that record and his experience of playing in Japan in the Asian Golf Tour should come in handy.
The other Indian golfer in the fray, Udayan Mane will be making his Olympic debut.
The 30-year-old Udayan Mane, ranked 386 in the world, only entered at the eleventh hour after Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo pulled out.
Local hero Hideki Matsuyama - who became Japan’s first Major champion when he won the Masters earlier this year - will be one of the favourites for the title.
The Olympics golf men’s field will also have Open champion Collin Morikawa and world No. 4 Justin Thomas, both from the USA. Reigning Olympic champion Justin Rose didn’t make the cut.
Major champions Bryson DeChambeau of the USA and world No. 1 Jon Rahm of Spain will be missing from Tokyo 2020 after they tested positive for COVID-19 and were forced to withdraw.
Unlike a regular golf event, no golfers will be cut after two rounds. The whole field, in groups of three, will play all four rounds, with the medals being handed out at the end of the fourth round.
