Name: Hannah Kearney Sport: Freestyle Skiing Country: USA

How and why did you start your sport?

My parents taught me to ski at the age of 2, before I can even remember, as a way to enjoy the great outdoors as a family. I signed up for freestyle skiing at the local hill with my mother when I was 8 years old because I wasn't interested in skiing really fast, and my mother's gymnastics background made freestyle sound appealing to her.

What achievements are you most proud of in your sporting career?

I am most proud of winning an Olympic gold medal for the United States of America in 2010 because it represented absolute redemption from my failure at the previous Games.

What achievements are you most proud of outside your sporting career?

I am proud of my grades, because they represent a lot of hard work, and I am proud of being accepted to Dartmouth College.

Favourite moment at the Olympics? A special memory of one of your participations?

Walking into the Opening Ceremony from beneath the stadium in Vancouver was exhilarating and unforgettable. It made my Olympic dream feel real.

What made you want to participate in the Youth Olympic Games?

Because I just recently retired, I thought my experiences as an athlete could provide insight to the talented, serious competitors of the YOG.

What do you like most about the Youth Olympic Games concept?

I think the YOG is the best way to prepare for the Olympic Games. Without the YOG, athletes have no way to mentally prepare for the magnitude of the Olympics due to its unique timing and the fact that so many sports and athletes meet in one city.  Through the YOG, I imagine that athletes will forge friendships and rivalries that will last for the rest of their careers.

What’s next for you in your career?

My athletic career is behind me, so now I will focus on my academic career.

What are your hobbies?

I love cooking, hiking, biking, and organising.
