Geeta Phogat is the most-tweeted-about female athlete in India - Who makes it to the top three? 

Wrestler Geeta Phogat grabbed the number one position on the list of the most tweeted about female sports personalities of the year 2020. 

She beat India's ace badminton stars PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal to the pole position as the shuttlers came second and third respectively in the rankings. These three athletes were the most mentioned figures on Twitter in the year 2020, as revealed by Twitter India. 

She is the first woman wrestler from India to win gold in the 2010 Commonwealth Games beating Emily Bensted from Australia in the gold medal match with a score of 1-0, 7-0. 

In 2012, she became the first woman to qualify for the Olympics. In the same year, she bagged Bronze in the World Wrestling Championships (WWC). Aamir Khan's film Dangal is loosely based on Geeta Phogat and her sister's lives.  

Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal, who ranked second on the list, inscribed her name in the record books by winning a bronze medal at the London Olympics in 2012. In the next edition of the Olympics, fellow badminton ace PV Sindhu bagged the silver medal and bettered Nehwal's feat.

But because of the Covid-19 pandemic, their preparations for the Tokyo Olympics have been hampered.  Most of the tournaments ended up getting cancelled and the duo, who had initially enlisted themselves in the Indian squad for the Denmark Open in October, eventually pulled out. Even the sixth edition of the Premier Badminton League has been postponed by the organisers due to the pandemic. 

Nehwal has struggled with niggles and is currently on the 22nd spot in the world rankings. Whereas, Sindhu last took to the court for a competitive match back in March at the All England Open. 

However, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) is set to host a tournament in Bangkok in January where both the athletes are expected to participate. The Thailand Open events are set to start from January 12,  which will be followed by the BWF World Tour Finals.
