USA edge Mexico to stay perfect going into W Championship semi-finals
Late winner from Kristie Mewis hands the United States a 1-0 win against the tournament hosts as Mexico are eliminated from Women's World Cup qualifying.
Second-half substitute Kristie Mewis broke the deadlock in the dying minutes as USA finished the football CONCACAF W Championship group phase with the maximum nine points after a 1-0 victory over Mexico on Monday (11 July).
Mewis pushed in the lone goal of the Group A affair in the final minute for the United States, who will face Costa Rica in Thursday's semi-final.
Joining USA in the last four will be Jamaica, who earlier beat Haiti 4-0 and will meet Group B winners and Tokyo 2020 Olympic champions Canada in three days' time.
The top two from the two groups at the eight-team W Championship qualify automatically for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The third-place teams head to the intercontinental play-offs.
The winners of the W Championship also qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Hosts Mexico, who went down a player in the 73rd minute following Jacqueline Ovalle's straight red, were eliminated from World Cup qualifying with their third defeat in as many games to finish bottom of the table.
Alex Morgan was back in the starting XI for the United States. Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Megan Rapinoe came off the bench midway through the second half to key the late American push.
