Star hurdler Jyothi Yarraji and Olympian shooter Manu Bhaker are a part of the 227-member Indian contingent that will compete at the FISU World University Games 2023 in Chengdu, the People’s Republic of China from July 28 to August 8.

Judoka Tulika Maan, shooters Divyansh Singh Panwar, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Elavenil Valarivan, Chinki Yadav and Yashaswini Singh Deswal, national record-holding sprinter Amlan Borgohain, race walker Priyanka Goswami and swimmer Srihari Nataraj will be some of the other prominent names in the Indian camp at Chengdu 2023. A 12-member wushu team was withdrawn due to visa issues. 

The FISU World University Games 2023 will be live streamed in India.

A total of 269 medals will be on offer at Chengdu, of which 50 are in athletics and 42 in swimming.

The opening ceremony of the FISU World University Games 2023 Chengdu will be held on July 28 at the Dong'an Lake Sports Park Stadium while the closing ceremony is scheduled for August 8 at the Chengdu Open Air Music Park.

The archery and water polo events, however, will get underway on July 27.

The biennial World University Games, formerly known as the Universiade, began in 1959 and India have been participating in the multi-sport meet since the inaugural edition.

So far, India’s best performance came at the 2015 World University Games in Gwangju, the Republic of Korea. India won five medals – one gold, one silver and three bronze – in 2015.

At the last edition held in Naples in 2019, India won four medals – one gold, one silver and two bronze.

The upcoming World University Games will be the 31st edition of the Summer Universiade. It was earlier scheduled to be held in 2021 but was postponed due to COVID-19.

Meant for university students from all across the globe, the World University Games is amongst the largest multi-sport events in the world.

Live streaming of the FISU World University Games 2023 will be available on Olympics.com and FISU TV. There will be no live telecast of the event on any TV channel in India.
