Indian shooters, spearheaded by Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Palak Gulia, finished the FISU World University Championship Shooting 2024 with a rich haul of 24 medals - nine gold, nine silver and six bronze.

The five-day shooting event concluded at the Dr Karni Singh Range in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Olympian Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Palak, the reigning women’s 10m air pistol Asian Games champions, were the standout home shooters at the meet with four medals each.

Aishwary took the individual silver in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions shooting event while securing gold for India in the team category alongside Adriyan Karmakar and Parikshit Singh Brar.

The 23-year-old Aishwary, along with Smit Rameshbhai Moradiya and Umamahesh Maddineni, also registered the men’s 10m air rifle team event’s gold medal for India.

He also paired up with Sanjeeta Das to win gold in the mixed team 10m air rifle event. The Indian duo beat the Republic of Korea’s Hyobeen Kim and Junhwan Lee 17-15 in the gold medal match after topping the qualifiers.

Palak Gulia, meanwhile, won the individual silver medal in women’s 10m air pistol event ahead of Arshdeep Kaur. The duo, with former junior world champion Sainyam in tow, also won the team gold medal in the event.

In the mixed team 10m air pistol event, Palak teamed up with Amit Sharma to win gold after beating compatriots Sainyam and Samrat Rana in the final.

Her fourth podium finish came in the women’s 25m pistol team event where she, with individual silver medallist Simranpreet Kaur Brar and Arshdeep Kaur, won another gold.

The only Indian shooter to win an individual gold medal at the New Delhi meet, however, was Bhavtegh Singh Gill, who bagged the top podium in the men’s skeet event after beating Cyprus’ Petros Englezoudis in a shoot-off after both were tied at a score of 58 in the final.

Smit Moradiya, meanwhile, narrowly missed the gold in the men’s 10m air rifle individual event with just 0.1 separating him from Czechia’s Jiří Přívratský, an Olympian.

Sift Kaur Samra, who won the women’s 50m 3P individual gold at the Hangzhou Asian Games with a world record score in the final, finished fourth in the same event in New Delhi. However, she did manage to secure a silver in the team event with Manini Kaushik and Vanshika Shahi.
