Crystal globe battle heats up at the site of the 2023 FIS Freestyle Skiing World Championships

It wasn’t long ago that the slopes of Bakuriani played host to the 2023 FIS Freestyle Skiing World Championships. Skiers will hope to tap into the memory of that competition during the third round of the FIS Freestyle Skiing Moguls World Cup.

France’s Perrine Laffont will certainly be eager to replicate her results on the piste where she claimed her second world championship title in 2023. She enters the competition in hot form, fresh off two podium finishes at the World Cup in Ruka, Finland, and Idre Fjäll, Sweden.

Unfortunately, one of the sport’s biggest stars - Beijing 2022 Olympic champion Jakara Anthony - will be absent from the competition in Bakuriani due to an injury she suffered during the second World Cup competition of the season.

Of course, it’ll be far from a one-woman show at the Georgian resort, with Canada’s Maia Schwinghammer and a host of American skiers ready to write their own winning script amongst the bumps of jumps of the moguls piste.

The men’s competition will be equally appealing as well, with Canada’s Mikael Kingsbury looking to continue an uninterrupted run of World Cup victories at the Georgian resort.

He’ll face a stiff challenge from Japan’s Ikuma Horishima, who’s also made both World Cup podiums this season. With an Olympic bronze medal to boot, he’s certainly not a skier to be taken lightly whenever he points his skis down the piste.

Neither is Sweden’s Walter Wallberg - gold medallist in the men’s moguls at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. He’s stood on both podiums this Kingsbury and Horishima this season but has yet to find a victory of his own. Perhaps that’ll change in Bakuriani.
