The FIH Pro League 2023-24 resumes this Wednesday with the European leg of the competition. Both the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams will be in action.
The first half of the FIH Pro League’s Europe leg will take place in Antwerp, Belgium before the bandwagon moves to London in June.
Both Indian teams will play Argentina and Belgium twice in Antwerp from May 22 to 26 before engaging in doubleheaders against Germany and Great Britain in London between June 1 to 9. Matches will be live streamed.
After the first two legs of the ongoing FIH Pro League, played across Odisha’s Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, the Indian men’s hockey team is third on the points table with 15 points from eight games.
Led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, the Indian team will look to put on a strong showing in the final stretch of its FIH Pro League campaign to build momentum ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics campaign, which starts in July.
The Indian women’s hockey team, meanwhile, is sixth on the FIH Pro League 2023-24 points table with eight points from as many matches after the Odisha leg.
The team, however, will be under new leadership for its European venture with Salima Tete replacing Savita Punia as the captain. Navneet Kaur is the vice-captain.
The champions of the FIH Pro League 2023-24 season will win a berth in the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, to be co-hosted by the Netherlands and Belgium. Since both hosts are automatically qualified for the World Cup, if either of the two finishes at the top of the standings, the berth will pass on to the next-best team in the table.
India have never won the FIH Pro League title. Both the men’s and women’s teams came in third in 2021-22, which is their best finish in the competition to date.
The Netherlands are the reigning FIH Pro League champions in both the men’s and women’s categories.
