The FIH Men's Hockey World Cup 2023, the 15th edition of the quadrennial hockey showpiece, was held at Rourkela and Bhubaneswar in Odisha, India.
The top 16 teams in the world played in the men’s hockey World Cup 2023, which ended on January 29.
Two venues - the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar and the newly-constructed Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela - hosted the 44 matches on the hockey World Cup 2023 schedule.
The Argentina vs South Africa Pool A clash at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar set the ball rolling and Argentina’s Maico Casella Schuth scored the first and only goal of the men’s hockey World Cup 2023 match in the 43rd-minute.
The second match of the 2023 hockey World Cup saw a goalfest with Australia hammering France 8-0. Australian forwards Jeremy Hayward scored the first hat-trick of the tournament. Shortly afterwards in the same match, Aussie Thomas William Craig completed his hattrick.
At the preceding hockey World Cup in 2018, also held in India, a total of 36 matches were played and 157 goals were scored. Australia’s Blake Govers and Belgium’s Alexander Hendrickx top-scored during the tournament with seven goals each.
