Paraguay, though 54 places worse off than Argentina in the rankings, can still make for a tricky opponent for the world champions, who just about managed to scrape through with a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture last year thanks to an early Nicolas Otamendi goal.

In fact, the last seven meetings between the two South American football teams have yielded just seven goals. Though Argentina have lost only one of these, they managed to win only two. The remaining four have ended in draws.

After each team plays 18 matches in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers, the top six will directly qualify for the main event while the seventh-placed side will enter the inter-confederation playoff.
