The Australian men's football team will host Lebanon in the second round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 AFC qualifiers, with the matches set to be played on Thursday and Tuesday.
The first Australia vs Lebanon FIFA World Cup qualifier match will be played at Sydney’s CommBank Stadium and the second will be at the GIO Stadium in Canberra. The game in Canberra will be designated as a home game for Lebanon. Both matches will be available on live streaming and on TV in Australia.
Australia opened their campaign in Group I with a 7-0 victory against Bangladesh in November which was followed by a 1-0 win over a resilient Palestinian side. Lebanon are second in the group, having played out a goalless draw against Palestine and a 1-1 draw against Bangladesh in their first window.
This will be the first competitive fixture between Australia and Lebanon. The two sides played friendly matches in 2012 and 2018 with Australia winning 3-0 on both occasions.
This will also be the first time the Socceroos will take the field since the 2-1 defeat to the Republic of Korea in the quarter-finals of the AFC Asian Cup last month.
The second round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 AFC qualifiers features 36 football teams divided into nine groups of four. The teams will play each other in a home-away round-robin format.
The top two teams from the group qualify for the third qualifying round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America and earn a direct entry in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup to be held in Saudi Arabia.
The Australian football team, the 2015 AFC Asian Cup winners, has featured in the FIFA World Cup six times. Their best performances in the World Cup came in 2006 and 2022 when they made it to the round of 16.
