ESports will make its debut at the Asian Games 2022 with medals being awarded in eight games, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced on Wednesday.

The eight medal games are FIFA (made by EA SPORTS), an Asian Games version of PUBG Mobile and Arena of Valor, Dota 2, League of Legends, Dream Three Kingdoms 2, HearthStone and Street Fighter V.

Each title will have a gold, silver and bronze medal on offer, which means 24 medals can be won in esports at the upcoming continental showpiece in Hangzhou, China in 2022.

Two more games - Robot Masters and VR Sports - will be played as demonstration events at the 2022 Asian Games.

“I believe we have ticked all the right boxes ensuring a high level of competition which promises great viewing for enthusiasts and casuals alike,” said OCA Director General, Husain Al-Musallam.

“We at the OCA are looking forward to working closely with our friends at the Asian Electronic Sports Federation and the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee to ensure a successful execution of the esports event at the 2022 Asian Games.”

The Asian Electronic Sports Federation (AESF) will be the technical delegate for esports. They will be responsible for the qualifying competition and management at the Asian Games 2022.

Esports was a demonstration event at the 2018 Asian Games - which means that medals won by competitors did not count towards the final medal tally.

India’s Tirth Mehta had won the bronze medal in the HearthStone demonstration event at the 2018 Asian Games.
