The Indian men’s basketball team opens its FIBA Asia Cup 2022 campaign against New Zealand in Jakarta on July 13.

The 16-team competition will see India compete in Group D along with Lebanon, the Philippines and New Zealand. Each team will face the other three once in a round-robin format.

The top team from each group will advance to the quarter-finals while the second and third-placed nations compete in the playoffs. The winners from the playoffs will move to the quarters.

World No. 82 India, after facing New Zealand in the opener, will be up against the Philippines on July 15 before taking on Lebanon on July 17.

All three teams are ranked higher than India, New Zealand are 27th, the Philippines 34th and Lebanon 54th.

India haven’t had the best of outings at the continental event in recent years after failing to reach the top eight in the last seven editions. Their best finish came in 1975 when they ended fourth.

Before heading to the Asia Cup 2022, India were in action in the FIBA World Cup 2023 Asia Qualifiers where they faced the Philippines in Manila. The visitors lost 79-63 but are still through to the second round which begins in August.

Muin Bek Hafeez top-scored for India with 13 points while Sahaij Pratap Singh and Arvind Kumar Krishnan added 12 each. India, however, will need to up their defensive efforts if they are to make a mark at the Asia Cup.
