The Indian women’s 3x3 basketball team will play in the main draw of the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2023 basketball tournament after replacing Qatar in Pool D.

The Indian women’s 3x3 basketball team, who won the inaugural edition of the Asia Cup in 2013, had to top the Qualifying Draw A of the women’s FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2023 to advance to the main draw.

On Wednesday, India beat Hong Kong (world No. 112) and lost to New Zealand (world No. 42) in their first two qualifying matches. With qualifiers against Sri Lanka (world No. 68) and Tahiti (world No. 163) at the Singapore Sports Hub OCBC Square on Thursday, India needed to win both the ties and hope for a slip up by New Zealand to make the main draw.

India beat Sri Lanka 18-10 and Tahiti 10-5 only to finish second in the Qualifying Draw A standings with three wins and 54 points from their four matches. Raspreet Sidhu was the standout player for India on the day with nine points against Sri Lanka and four against Tahiti.

New Zealand won both their matches on Thursday to top the group with a perfect record and 79 points and secured the qualifying spot in Pool C of the main draw.

However, after Qatar, who were already placed in the Pool D of the main draw with Thailand, pulled out, India replaced them courtesy of being the second-placed team in Qualifying Draw A. Australia, the winner of the Qualifying Draw B, will be the third team in Pool D.

In the main draw, India will play Thailand first and then take on Australia on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Indian men’s 3x3 basketball team, currently world No. 49, will be in action on Saturday. Having made the main draw directly, the men’s team is placed with China and Kazakhstan in Pool C.

The men’s team will open their campaign against Kazakhstan and then play China in the second match.

In each of the men’s and women’s FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2023 main draws, a total of 12 teams, divided into four pools, will compete. The top two teams from each pool will qualify for the quarter-finals.

The champions of the men’s and women’s FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2023 basketball tournaments will earn a spot in one of the 3x3 basketball Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (OQT) for the Paris 2024 Summer Games.
