Remco Evenepoel's preparations for the upcoming road cycling season suffered a setback after the Olympic champion sustained multiple fractures in an incident on Tuesday (3 December).

The 24-year-old was reportedly involved in a collision with a post van while training in Belgium. As a result of the crash, his trademark gold bike was snapped in half.

Following his transfer to Erasmus Hospital in Anderlecht, scans revealed "fractures to his rib, right shoulder blade, and his right hand," according to a statement from his team, Soudal-QuickStep.

Evenepoel remained conscious throughout the incident. His injuries will undergo further evaluation at Herentals Hospital, where a recovery plan will be decided, the team added.

The Belgian rider, who is also a three-time elite world champion, made history in recent months by becoming the first cyclist to win both the Olympic road race and time trial at the same Games when he claimed his two golds at Paris 2024.
