Badminton, European Games 2023: Viktor Axelsen and Carolina Marin cruise into semi-finals in Poland

Reigning European [badminton](https://olympics.com/en/sports/badminton/) champions [**Viktor Axelsen**](https://olympics.com/en/athletes/viktor-axelsen) and [**Carolina Marin**](https://olympics.com/en/athletes/carolina-marin) secure at least a bronze medal at the 2023 European Games after advancing to the semi-finals on Friday (30 June).

In the men’s singles, world number one Axelsen claimed another convincing victory as he defeated [**Kalle Koljonen**](https://olympics.com/en/athletes/kalle-koljonen) of Finland 21-10, 21-9. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion is set to face third seed **Toma Junior Popov** of France in the semi-final.

Meanwhile, 2016 Olympic champion Marin showcased her dominance in the women's singles, beating [**Kristin Kuuba**](https://olympics.com/en/athletes/kristin-kuuba) of Estonia 21-10, 21-10 and moving one step closer to claiming her seventh European Championships title. Her next opponent will be [**Kirsty Gilmour**](https://olympics.com/en/athletes/kirsty-gilmour) of Great Britain. They faced each other in last year's final in Madrid, where Marin came out on top.

The badminton tournament form women’s and men’s singles concludes on Sunday 2 July. The European Games count towards the BWF World Ranking and contribute to the qualification for Paris 2024.
