Jessica Gadirova claimed the women's European all-around artistic gymnastics crown in Antalya, Türkiye on Friday (14 April) scoring 55.032.

The Brit clinched the win with a sensational floor routine on the last rotation, to overtake the leader of the previous two rounds, Hungary's Zsofia Kovacs who claims a second silver European all-around medal with 54.899.

Italy's Alice D'Amato won bronze with 54.500 with a scintillating bar routine her highlight.

Dramatic European Gymnastics Championships 2023 women's all-around final

Belgium’s Lisa Vaelen flew into the lead in the first rotation with 14.333 on vault followed in quick succession by the top three qualifiers all within 0.100 of each other. Jessica Gadirova of Great Britain and Hungary's Zsofia Kovacs scored 14.100 while Italy's Alice D’Amato clocked 14.000. The scene was set.

Next up for the top group was bars and no one gave an inch. Two-time European bars medallist D’Amato was last to go, and held her nerve to go clean scoring 14.400 to take the lead. Vaelen performed a beautifully executed routine to go second (13.700) with Kovacs third and Gadirova fourth.

First up on beam was Gadirova, the top qualifier for the apparatus final, and a steady routine saw her rewarded with 13.533 with just the floor, another apparatus in which she topped the rankings, to come.

Vaelen’s beam started with a solid front somersault and that form continued throughout with just one wobble to count, scoring 12.933. The Belgian must have been wondering if a medal was possible.

Visser was the first to falter in the penultimate event with a fall on beam counting her out of the medals, just one mistake from an otherwise faultless routine has put paid to her chances of equalling or matching Netherlands’ bronze from the team final.

D’Amato looked a little nervy but stayed on to keep her challenge alive (13.000) while Kovacs, second to Gadirova in the beam qualification rankings, kept it clean and confident and headed into the lead with a 13.833 mark.

Now to floor, and it was all to play for with Kovacs top on 41.633, D’Amato next on 41.400, then Gadirova (41.099) and Vaelen (40.966).

A musical medley from rock to jazz saw Vaelen put it all out there on floor and left the floor thrilled with that final performance to score 13.133, finishing fourth overall just above team-mate Maellyse Brassart, scoring totals of 54.099 and 52.865, respectively.

D’Amato was next, her haunting musical start giving away to a thumping base that reverberated around the arena. It was a 13.100 score to take her temporarily top with a combined mark of 54.500. Next up though, was Kovacs.

The Hungarian held her nerve and performed difficult tumbles to jazzed up classical music, staking her claim to the title with a 13.266 to finish on a total of 54.899.

Gadirova was the last to go and the reigning world floor champion performed her heart out to score 13.933 to take her to the top for the first time in the competition – at the point when it mattered most.

“When I did come off the stage (after her floor performance) my coach did tell me what score I needed to be crowned all-around champion so I was literally waiting for that score to come up," Gadirova told Olympics.com. "I got butterflies in my stomach and seeing my name gradually rise up (the scoreboard) and be number one is like, oh, it's so crazy and I'm just so proud of myself.”

  • Next up is the first day of apparatus finals on Saturday 15 April.
