Elaine Thompson-Herah claims women's 100m gold at Birmingham 2022

The Jamaican superstar beat St Lucia's Julien Alfred who claimed silver while the home crowd had something to cheer when Daryll Neita bagged bronze in the 2022 Commonwealth Games final.

In a result that surprised no one but wowed the crowd nevertheless, Jamaica's five-time Olympic gold medallist Elaine Thompson-Herah stormed to women's 100m gold at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday (3 August).

On a beautiful balmy night at the newly spruced up athletics track at the Alexander Stadium, the sprint queen won her third Commonwealth Games medal in a time of 10.95s.

Julien Alfred of St Lucia claimed silver in a time of 11.01s and England's Daryll Neita the bronze (11.07s).

Thompson-Herah said after the win: " I didn't have the best execution but nevertheless I had to dig for that one but I am still grateful to win my first Commonwealth Games.

"I started in 2014 in the 4x100m. Then in 2018 in the 200m I came fourth and now I upgraded to a gold."

Meanwhile, Neita told the BBC: "The overriding emotion is that it is nice to get another medal on home soil I really didn't put the best race together today and that makes me want to get back to work right now.

"I am in fantastic shape but I need to do better in these finals. It's fantastic. I am racing the fastest woman to have ever existed and the fact I am getting closer and these women are so encouraging. It's a great atmosphere to be a part of."
