The Durand Cup 2023 football tournament ran from August 3 to September 3. A total of 24 teams, four more than last year, took part in the month-long competition with Mohun Bagan winning the title. They beat arch-rivals East Bengal in the final.
Started in 1888, the Durand Cup is the oldest football competition in India and Asia. It’s also the third-oldest in the world. The 2023 edition was the 132nd edition of the tournament, run by India’s Armed Forces.
The Durand Cup 2023 format consisted of two stages - the group stage and the knockout rounds. Matches were played in West Bengal and two venues in Assam.
For the group stage, the 24 teams were drawn into six groups of four teams each.

- Group B: Indian Navy, Jamshedpur FC, Mohammedan SC, Mumbai City FC
- Group C: Bengaluru FC, Gokulam Kerala FC, Indian Air Force FT, Kerala Blasters
- Group D: Downtown Heroes FC, FC Goa, NorthEast United FC, Shillong Lajong
- Group E: Chennaiyin FC, Delhi FC, Hyderabad FC, Tribhuwan Army
- Group F: Bodoland FC, Indian Army FC, Odisha FC, Rajasthan United FC
Teams in each group played each other in a single-legged round-robin format, after which the top teams from each group and the two best second-placed teams across all six groups progressed to the eight-team quarter-finals.
The Durand Cup 2023 football final was played between arch-rivals Mohun Bagan and East Bengal on September 3 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) in Kolkata.
