The draw for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 table tennis tournament has been made.

The women's singles competition, which saw 70 players qualify, has been split between four rounds. World no.1 and no.2 - CHEN Meng of People's Republic of China and ITO Mima of Japan, were put into round 3 alongside the top 16 seeded players.

Those ranked 17-32 were placed in round 2, followed by players ranked 33-48 in round 1. Players ranked 49-64 will need to navigate their way out of the preliminary round.

The final group of competitors, ranked 65-70, will face six players at random from the preliminaries, with Jian Fang Lay of Australia against Daniela Fonseca of Cuba and Team USA's Juan Liu against Olufunke Oshonaike of Nigeria.

The remaining players in the round will have a bye and move to round 1.

The men's singles saw some of the biggest names in the sport placed in round 3, with China's FAN Zhendong and MA Long - no.1 and no.2 seeds respectively - entering the same stage of the tournament as Japan's HARIMOTO Tomokazu and Hugo Calderano of Brazil.

The men's draw is ranked almost the same as the women's singles, bar there will only be one match in the preliminary round with 15 players automatically moving into round 1.

In the women's draw, Ito, who won bronze in the team event at Rio 2016, will come up against Portugal's 2019 European Games gold medallist YU Fu with Team USA's two-time Olympian Lily Zhang facing former world championship bronze medallist CHEN Szu Yu from Chinese Taipei.

The mixed doubles saw top seeds Hong Kong and the People's Republic of China on the same side of the draw with with Japan and Chinese Taipei on the other side.

In both the women's and men's team competition, People's Republic of China, who have been undefeated since the introduction of the events at Beijing 2008, and host nation Japan, were placed on either side of the draw with a tantalising gold medal on the horizon.
