The Indian tennis team will take on hosts Denmark in the Davis Cup 2023 World Group I play-offs at the Royal Stage Stadium in Hillerod on Friday and Saturday. The tie will be live streamed in India.
India, 26th in the Davis Cup rankings, and world No. 45 Denmark also met at the same stage last year with India winning the contest 4-0 on the grass courts in New Delhi.
However, with world No. 9 men’s singles player Holger Rune in their ranks, Denmark will look to turn the tables on the hard courts in Hillerod.
A win will see India make the Davis Cup 2023 World Group I stage while a loss will see them drop into Group II. India have never dropped out from Group I.
The India vs Denmark tennis tie will feature one doubles and four singles matches. Veteran Rohan Bopanna, world No. 17 in doubles, is expected to lead India’s challenge in doubles.
Prajnesh Gunneswaran, 342nd in the ATP Rankings, is India’s top-ranked singles player for the tie. Sumit Nagal is on a comeback trail and is ranked 506th. Ramkumar Ramanathan (413 in singles) and Yuki Bhambri (571 in singles) complete the five-member Indian tennis team.
For Denmark, Holger Rune is the only singles player ranked inside the top 400.
India had dropped down to the Group I play-offs after losing to Norway in the Group I tie in the 2022 Davis Cup season.
The Indian tennis team is yet to win the Davis Cup but has finished runners-up thrice - 1966, 1974 and 1987.
