Former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham attended the India vs New Zealand Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-final match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday.
Beckham is on a three-day visit to India as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. He was in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.
UNICEF has partnered with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to promote equal opportunities for girls and boys in South Asia.
In Mumbai, David Beckham first met former India batter Sachin Tendulkar, also a UNICEF Regional Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia, before the two headed to the Wankhede.
The two legends then walked onto the field ahead of the match and met a few players from both New Zealand and the Indian cricket team, and posed for photos with the ODI ICC World Cup trophy.
Later, the 48-year-old Beckham was seen chatting with Virat Kohli at the boundary before the start of the match.
“I have come to India for the first time at the right time,” Beckham said. “I have been here for Diwali, I have been here for New Year, and now I am here for my first game at the World Cup. It’s very special.
“I love coming to great stadiums and great atmospheres," he added. "Obviously, this is one of the best. Before the match even started, you walk out here and you feel there’s something special at this stadium. I felt that before the match started. I feel very humbled and very lucky to be here."
David Beckham is a retired English professional footballer and one of the most iconic and successful players of his generation. He is currently the co-owner of Major League Soccer (MLS) side Inter Miami, where Lionel Messi plays.
Beyond his sporting career, Beckham is also known for his global celebrity status, fashion endeavours and philanthropic work.
South Africa and Australia will play the other semi-final on Thursday in Kolkata.
