Daniel Tschofenig moved into the overall lead of the 2024/25 Four Hills Tournament in ski jumping with a thrilling win in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the second stop of the Four Hills, on Wednesday (1 January).
The Austrian, who was third last weekend at the opening stop of the tournament in Oberstdorf, was unstoppable in both rounds on Wednesday on the Grosse Olympiaschanze.
Having produced the highest-scoring first round jump with a 151.6 (141.5m), just ahead of countryman Michael Hayboeck's 149.3 points (although Hayboeck had the further jump at 145m), the 22-year-old Tschofenig showed no signs of pressure as the last man to jump in the final round.
Tschofenig soared out to a 143m jump for a score of 147.3, good for a total of 298.9 points more than eight points clear of second-placed Gregor Deschwanden. The result is the 22-year-old's first career World Cup victory in an individual event, adding to three team wins he has under his belt.
The excitement had come before Tschofenig's final jump though as Jan Hoerl, ninth in the first round, took the lead and held off challenges from those who came after until Slovenia's Anze Lanisek – the winner at Garmisch last year – displaced him.
Deschwanden then went ahead on 290.3 points and held off Hayboeck, who produced a below-par final jump to finish on 289.0 points total.
Reigning Four Hills champion Kobayashi Ryoyu continues to struggle. He was only 37th in the first round but progressed to the final round, where he finished 28th.
With two podium finishes from the first two stops of the Four Hills Tournament, Tschofenig is in pole position for the Golden Eagle trophy. He sits 7.9 points clear of Hoerl, with Oberstdorf winner Stefan Kraft a further 0.8 points adrift in third.
The next round of the Four Hills tournament will be held in Innsbruck, Austria, on 4 January.
