Cyprien Sarrazin stole the show in Bormio, Italy, by securing his first career downhill win in the Alpine skiing FIS World Cup on Thursday (28 December).

The 29-year-old became the first Frenchman to triumph on the Stelvio course since Luc Alphand in 1996 and confirmed his progress in speed after just missing the podium in the previous race in Val Gardena.

Starting with the bib number four, Sarrazin skied superbly in the lower part of the track, perfectly mastering the Carcentina section and the San Pietro jump, and only Marco Odermatt could match his pace.

The Swiss star paid the price for some minor mistakes in the lower section and crossed the line in second place, just nine hundredths of a second slower, the equivalent of less than three metres.

Canada's Cameron Alexander claimed the last spot on the podium, finishing 1.23 seconds behind the winner.

"Finally I did a great run, from the first gate to the finish line," Sarrazin told Eurosport.

"I felt so great, I pushed all the way and I really enjoyed it. When I crossed the finish line I told myself, 'Yes, you did your job!'. It was perfect."

Pre-race favourites Dominik Paris and Alexander Aamodt Kilde were soon out of contention: the Italian, a seven-time winner in Bormio, nearly crashed and finished almost seven seconds off the pace, while the Norwegian stopped before the last third of his run after a rock damaged his equipment.

Among the DNFs was temporary overall leader Marco Schwarz: the Austrian crashed at high speed into the net when he was on track for a top-5 position and was later airlifted by a helicopter with a suspected knee injury.

After today's results, Odermatt moved to the top of both the overall and downhill World Cup standings.
