Jessie Diggins is well on track to regain the Tour de Ski title she first won in 2021.
The American cross-country skier was only ninth in the opening sprint race in Toblach, but her third place in the 10km interval start Classic on New Year's Eve saw her take the overall leader's yellow bib.
And on Monday (1 January), the PyeongChang 2018 team sprint gold medallist opened her lead in the general classification up to 47 seconds in the 20km pursuit before the skiers leave Toblach for Davos in Switzerland.
Diggins started the day just seven seconds clear of Beijing 2022 team sprint gold medallist Victoria Carl but attacked from the off and was soon 30 seconds clear of the German.
That gap was up to a minute 3km from home, but Carl did manage to reduce the arrears to cross the line 46.5 seconds after Diggins.
Astrid Øyre Slind took the stage win from reigning Tour de Ski champion Frida Karlsson with 2017 and 2018 winner Heidi Weng third ahead of Diggins.
In the men's pursuit, Jan Thomas Jenssen took victory on the day by 2.5 seconds from fellow Norwegian Henrik Doennestad.
Despite finishing 13th on the day, Harald Østberg Amundsen moved past Erik Valnes to take the overall lead by 32 seconds.
The skiers have the first of two races in Davos on Wednesday before heading back to Italy and Val di Fiemme where the final two races, including the infamous final climb up Alpe Cermis, take place at the weekend.
