Cornelia ‘Conny’ Hütter confirmed she's one of the most in-form women on the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup circuit, claiming her second win of the season in the Super-G in St. Moritz, Switzerland, on Saturday (21 December).
The 32-year-old Austrian, starting with bib number 8, navigated the undulating Corviglia course masterfully on the same slope where she finished second last year.
Under clear skies and ideal snow conditions, Hütter trailed leader Lara Gut-Behrami in the upper section but found her rhythm in the second half, recording the fastest speed (100.43 km/h) and carving the best line through the final tricky compression.
She crossed the finish line in 1:15.18, and her time held. Olympic champion and local favourite Gut-Behrami made a costly mistake on a bumpy right footer over the last roller and settled for second, 0.18 seconds behind. Italian Sofia Goggia, the overall standings leader, suffered in the top part but still secured third place (+0.33).
Hütter, who won the downhill in Beaver Creek last week, became the first Austrian to win the Super-G in St. Moritz since Michaela Dorfmeister in 2006. The result lifts her to second in the overall rankings, trailing only Camille Rast.
"Winning is not that common for me. It's not everyday business, so I think I can enjoy today and think about tomorrow," the 2023 Super-G world bronze medallist told FIS after her win was confirmed.
"At the start, I was hoping everything would go well. After inspection, I thought it was a little easier, but after the first racers I thought, 'Okay, it's really tough, it's not easy,' and that was also my feeling through the run. Some parts were not easy because the gates were coming so fast."
Gut-Behrami and Goggia both admitted they were not fully happy with their runs. On Sunday, they will have an opportunity to make up for it as St. Moritz hosts a second Super-G race.
