Indian table tennis player Sharath Kamal will be playing for two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Sunday taking the court to fight for the men’s doubles and the mixed doubles title.
The veteran Sharath Kamal will also be in action against Paul Drinkhall of England in the men's singles semi-final at the National Exhibition Centre in Solihull.
Sharath Kamal has assured India of two medals as he reached the final of both men's and mixed doubles events. Along with Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Sharath Kamal will face Paul Drinkhall and Liam Pitchford in the men’s doubles gold medal match after beating the Australian pair of Nicholas Lum and Finn Luu 3-2 in the semi-finals.
The 40-year-old Sharath Kamal combined with Sreeja Akula to enter the mixed doubles final with a 3-2 victory over Aussies Nicholas Lum and Jee Minhyung . The Indian pair will fight for the gold medal against Karen Lyne and Choong Jayen of Malaysia.
Sharath, playing in his fifth CWG, won bronze in men's singles four years ago at Gold Coast 2018.
In the singles, Sharath Kamal, ranked 39, will have the upper hand against Drinkhall, ranked 74. His compatriot G Sathiyan, ranked 35, will meet World No. 20 Liam Pitchford of England in the other semi-final. Sathiyan is yet to win a singles medal at the CWG.
World No. 76 Sreeja Akula, who lost her women's singles encounter 4-3 against Tianwei Feng of Singapore, will face Yangzi Liu of Australia, ranked 72, in the bronze medal match.
India thus stand to win three medals on Sunday and assure two more in table tennis in the men’s singles.
