Commonwealth Games 2022: Maddison Keeney and Anabelle Smith claim diving women's 3m synchronised gold in 'redemption arc'
The experienced Australian pair won all five rounds to land their first Commonwealth title at Birmingham's Sandwell Aquatics Centre, while Ng Yan Yee and Nur Dhabitah of Malaysia picked up silver.
Maddison Keeney and Anabelle Smith put on a diving masterclass to win the women's 3m synchronised final at the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Saturday (6 August).
The Australians, who won Olympic bronze at Rio 2016, won all five rounds at Birmingham's Sandwell Aquatics Centre to secure their first first Commonwealth title with an overall total of 316.53.
"It's every day we've been together for eight years. There have been so many tough teams over the years, and even now, all the divers are amazing," Keeney said after.
"It's both of our first gold medals and I never thought I would be able to get it. I've struggled a lot, with nerves in the past."
It was an emotional victory for Keeney in particular, who must have felt some redemption after losing out on gold at the Gold Coast 2018 Games with an uncharacteristic mistake.
"It was really hard to process after, because it was my fault at the Gold Coast. That was a big learning curve. This feels like a culmination of what I've learned as a diver and how I can overcome nerves and approach my competitions.
"It was the redemption arc."
Malaysian pair Ng Yan Yee and Nur Dhabitah pulled off a stunning forward 2.5 somersaults 1 twist in pike worth 67.5 on their final attempt to snatch the silver medal away from Canada's Margo Erlam and Mia Vallee.
"Very proud of ourselves because we did 100 per cent and performed our very best. Our last competition was not as good as today. We are very proud and [this is] a surprise for us," Dhabitah admitted after.
The North American team settled for bronze with 297.00 overall, just two points shy of the Malaysians.
