Sofia Collinelli - Like father, like daughter
Her father was an Olympian, and now Sofia Collinelli is aiming for Olympic gold, too: the daughter of the Atlanta 1996 individual pursuit gold winner Andrea Collinelli will be representing Italy at the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 which kick off this Saturday.
Sofia Collinelli will compete along teammates Avondetto Simone, Dalla Valle Tommaso and Specia Giada under the technical supervision of Rino De Candido and Mirko Celestino. Recently she won the team pursuit event at the Junior Track Cycling World Championship held in Switzerland. As such, the Collinelli last name appeared once again in the history of Italian cycling, as her father won seven medals at the Track Cycling World Championships, including two golds in the team pursuit events (Manchester 1996 and Perth 1997).
Just before her success in Switzerland, Sofia had a big scare when she was bitten by two dogs in the city of Sant’Antonio, Italy, an incident that threatened her presence at the World Championships and the Youth Olympic Games. But thanks to her doctors and the support of her family, Collinelli was able to recover and she will be competing at Buenos Aires.
“I was very eager to participate in this great event and I’m thrilled that I can, because there was only one place available for the track event and it wasn’t easy. I’m very proud to represent Italy and I’m going to experience a new adventure because we’ll be racing in pairs in different trials,” said Sofia before embarking on her trip to Buenos Aires.
