Coleman, Gatlin hit cruise control as Allyson Felix makes big comeback 

Christian Coleman is U.S. national 100m champ for the first time after a 9.99 second sprint.

The USATF Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on Friday night (26th July) was ready for a Coleman v Justin Gatlin head-to-head, but Gatlin opted not to run the final as he already has a bye to worlds as defending champ.

In his absence it was all about Coleman winning as he did at the Prefontaine Classic in Stanford on 30 June.

Michael Rodgers took second in 10.12 (10.114), Christopher Belcher also booked his ticket to Doha in 10.12 (10.120).

Coleman secured his spot with Team USA roster for the World Championships in Doha 63 days from today.

Teahna Daniels took the women's 100m in 11.20.

Coleman gets it done

Coleman's semifinal was faster than the final, cruising to a 9.97 - beating Gatlin comfortably who finished third - and shutting it down with 20m to go.

His execution of the start and the drive phase of the race put him in pole position and gave him the lane he wanted in the final, but Coleman wasn't near his 9.81 season's best.

He ran the race he had to and got the job done, but expect him to drop a few digits in Doha.

Coleman v Gatlin

Coleman's first career victory over the 37-year-old Gatlin came at the Prefontaine Classic in Stanford on 30 June, and he topped Gatlin again here in Iowa, albeit in a semi-final.

Gatlin has said he wants to win gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics so his son can watch him win; he would be oldest 100m gold medallist ever if he manages it in Tokyo.

Allyson Felix hailed as returning hero

6-time Olympic gold medallist and 11-time world champion Allyson Felix got a huge homecoming after 13 months out and becoming a mother.

Felix has talked openly about her difficult birth with her daughter Cameron, and the changes that motherhood have brought to her life.

A huge roar rang around the stadium when Felix made the final in the 400m semi final race.

In other action, Michael Norman ran a 44.04, second fastest time of the year in the semi-final, but he was pushed all the way by friend and training partner Fred Kerley.

Blade runner Blake Leeper won his semifinal by a stretch, and Ryan Crouser won the shot put.
