Head coach of Real Kashmir FC in the I-League, Scotsman David Robertson received the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the Queen’s birthday honours list last week.

The British Empire Medal is awarded for meritorious civil or military service. Footballer-turned-coach David Robertson received the honour for his outstanding contribution to the sport and the community as head coach of Real Kashmir FC.

The 52-year-old Robertson helped the club gain promotion to the I-League in his first season in charge in 2017-18, making them the first club from Kashmir to play in the top flight of Indian football.

Last year, the Scotsman led Real Kashmir FC to the IFA Shield trophy, giving them their first domestic title since they started in 2016.

David Robertson, who has played for clubs like Rangers and Leeds United and the Scotland national football team, credited Real Kashmir’s fans for their support and their role in making him feel welcome.

“I would like to dedicate this award to so many people who have contributed in their own way. The Snow Leopard fans are certainly one of them— they are part of the family. Without their support no club can succeed. The support and warmth they have given not only to me but the whole club is incredible,” Robertson told the official I-League website.

“I’m so proud to have been a part of an amazing story,” Robertson continued. “When I arrived in Kashmir almost five years ago, I found it tough as it was a new experience but that soon changed as I was made to feel so welcome by everyone not only those involved at RKFC, but the general public when I walked down the streets.”

“Now I feel so honoured and attached to the Kashmiri public, I feel so much appreciation for their continued support and feel I am working and wanting to do everything I can to give them a team to be proud of," Robertson added.
