After an hour and nine-minute battle, People's Republic of China's WANG Yi Lyu and HUANG Dong Ping have been crowned Olympic champions. The rubber match saw the pair battle it out against their compatriots ZHENG Si Wei and HUANG Ya Qiong, who fought valiantly with the final set ending 21-19.

The match began with Wang and Huang Dong Ping winning the first set 21-17 before the scores were reversed in the second, with Zheng and Huang Ya Qiong triumphing by the same margin.

It all came down to an epic final set that saw the tournament's second seeds come out on top by the slenderest of margins.

After the match, Wang expressed his joy at winning the gold medal: “It feels so good. I want the moment to last forever but it just goes so quickly," he said.

“This is my first Olympic experience. It’s such a special Olympics. I treasure and memorise every moment. The most memorable moment is having this gold medal.”

Huang Dong Ping said: “It’s a very sweet feeling, but I don’t (know) how to describe it,” before adding: “Especially in the later stages we kept encouraging each other and believing in each other and this is what got us the gold medal.”
