Men's singles tennis has a new world No. 1.

Carlos Alcaraz won the men's title at the 2022 US Open tennis grand slam on Sunday (11 September), defeating Casper Ruud to claim his first major title and the world number one ranking.

The crowd in Flushing Meadows in New York witnessed an unprecedented situation as a victory for either player would have meant a first major title and a world no. 1 ranking.

It was the 19-year-old Spaniard who ultimately prevailed to take home the fourth and final grand slam of the year.

Alcaraz won the first set 6-4 before Ruud responded with a swift 6-2 win in set number two. Alcaraz crucially edged a mammoth third set 7-6 to ultimately swing the tie in his favour and win his first major.

It comes after Iga Swiatek won the women's singles title on Saturday.

Mental toughness

Alcaraz displayed an extraordinary amount of mental fortitude en route to the title.

"I always say, 'It's no time to be tired' in the final of a grand slam or major tournament," Alcaraz said after the final.

The 19 year old won three consecutive grueling five-set matches in the lead-up to the final. He defeated Croatia's Marin Cilic in the fourth round (6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3), Italy's Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals (6-3, 6-7 [7-9], 6-7 [0-7], 7-5, 6-3) and USA's Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals (6-7 [6-8], 6-3, 6-1, 6-7 [5-7], 6-3).

"It's [mental toughness and stamina] something I work really hard on, so it's no time to be tired."
