Malaysian badminton star Lee Zii Jia will hope to get his 2024 Olympic season off to the perfect start on home soil this week at the BWF Super 1000 Malaysia Open 2024, the first BWF World Tour event of the year, from 9–14 January.

More Paris 2024 qualification ranking points are at stake in Kuala Lumpur, as the race to secure Olympic qualification heats up.

In KL, Lee has been drawn to face Lu Guangzu of People's Republic of China in the first round. The Malaysian has dominated across their five career meetings, holding a 4–1 head-to-head record against Lu.

The 25-year-old home favourite could face a tough test in the second round though against Indonesia's world number four Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, against whom Zii Jia has only won once in six attempts.

If he does get through to the last eight, the likes of Shi Yuqi, Rasmus Gemke, Chou Tien-chen, or Toma Jr Popov could lie in wait. World number one Viktor Axelsen is also in the same half of the draw.
