BWF China Open 2024: Loh Kean Yew exits in second round, Ginting beats world number one Shi

Men's singles draw continues to open up in Changzhou, with more big names missing out on quarter-final spots.

There were more shock results in the second round of badminton's BWF China Open 2024 on Thursday (19 September).

World number one Shi Yuqi followed double Olympic gold medallist Viktor Axelsen in an early exit from the men's singles.

Shi of People's Republic of China, was beaten in straight games by Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia, 21-11, 21-8.

Loh Kean Yew was another casualty, losing to Denmark's fifth seed Anders Antonsen in three games (21-12, 9-12, 21-18).

The former world champion from Singapore has won just one game in his three BWF World Tour events since Paris 2024 Olympics.

Meanwhile, Tour Rankings leader Chou Tien Chen was beaten by Weng Hong Yang (20-22, 21-18, 21-15), seventh seed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia edged past France's Toma Junior Popov in an epic comeback (16-21, 21-18, 22-20), and China's Lei Lan Xi, who eliminated Antonsen's compatriot Axelsen in the first round, overcame Nishimoto Kenta of Japan (21-8, 21-17) to reach the quarter-finals in Changzhou.

In the women's singles, Yamaguchi Akane came through against Chiu Pin-Chain, winning 17-21, 21-10, 21-13. Third seed Wang Zhi Yi is also in to the quarter-finals, to set up an all-Chinese clash with Gao Fang Jie.

World Tour rankings leader Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand was beaten by Yeo Jia Min (21-16, 21-17)
