Lee Zii Jia is back in action in this week's BWF China Open 2023 badminton World Tour tournament.

The Malaysian star shuttler who reached round three at the World Championships in Copenhagen, is hoping to advance to round two for the third tournament in a row, after having suffered several first round exits earlier this season.

But it won't be easy.

Lee is facing 2023 World Championship runner-up Naraoka Kodai of Japan in the first round. The Japanese world number three defeated Shi Yuqi of the People's Republic of China and Denmark’s Anders Antonsen on his way to the final in Copenhagen where he lost to Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn in three games.

It is the third meeting between the two with both players winning once. Lee took their last encounter at this year's All England Open where he reached the semi-finals.

The world number 14 is hoping to represent Malaysia at Paris 2024, and there are important Olympic qualifying points at stake in China.

If Lee makes it past Naraoka, he will up against France’s Toma Junior Popov or Lin Chun-Yi of Chinese Taipei.
