Lee Zii Jia is through to the quarter-finals at the BWF Arctic Open 2023 in Vantaa, Finland.
The Malaysian badminton star edged world number 22 Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo of Indonesia to win 21-17, 18-21, 21-11 in their men's singles clash on Thursday (12 October), live on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the official Olympics app (territorial restrictions apply).
Lee had little trouble finding his rhythm at the start of the second round match against Wardoyo, who began aggressively. Eventually, Lee got control of his play to wrap up the first game.
In the second, the Malaysian again struggeld to find his feet, and Wardoyo took control. With three unawered points, the Indonesian clinched the game.
Lee brushed off the slump for the decisive third game, and his conservative approach bore fruit, as he took home the victory on his second match point.
Next up for the world number 14 is compatriot Leong Jun Hao, who eliminated Arnaud Merkle of France 15-21, 21-17, 21-19 to reach the last eight.
Meanwhile, in women’s singles, first seeded Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei defeated Thailand’s Supanida Katethong 21-19, 21-16 to set up an encouter with world number 12 Pornpawee Chochuwong in the quarter-finals. Also two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu has advanced to the last eight beating Chinese Taipei’s Wen Chi Hsu 21-11, 21-10.
