India’s Suryadharshan Bagiyaraj (B-boy Crazy Bright) and Sushma Satish (B-girl Sushma) made an early exit from the Breaking for Gold World Series 2023 after failing to progress past the pre-selection stage in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Suryadharshan Bagiyaraj finished 68th in the B-boy category (for men) while Sushma Satish was placed 51st in the B-girl category (for women).
India sent two athletes, one B-boy and one B-girl, for the Breaking for Gold World Series 2023, which concluded on Saturday.
B-Boy Dany of France and Japan's B-Girl Ami claimed the men’s and women’s titles, respectively, on Saturday in the two-day breaking dance competition held on April 14 and 15.
B-Boy Dany bagged the title with a win over B-boy Phil Wizard of Canada, the 2022 world champion, in the men's final. Japan’s B-Boy Shigekix claimed the bronze medal, by beating American B-Boy Jeffro.
In the women’s final, B-Girl Ami defeated China's Liu Qing Yi - aka B-Girl 671 - for the title. Meanwhile, B-Girl Ayumi (Japan) fended off European champion B-Girl India (Netherlands) for bronze.
The competition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was the second stop in the Breaking for Gold World Series after the Kitakyushu meet in Japan, held in February.
The Rio meet was an Olympic qualifying event for Paris 2024, where breaking is set to make its Summer Games debut, and offered ranking points for participants.
A total of 85 athletes competed in the B-boy competition, while the B-girl competition was a 61-woman affair.
Points from the series count towards the Breaking for Gold rankings, of which the top 14 in each gender advance to next year's Olympic Qualifier Series.
The next Breaking for Gold World Series will be held on May 17th and 18th in Montpellier, France.
